The
Second “International Conference on Sports Engineering”
(ICSE-2021) was recently organized by Sports Engineering
Association (SEA) and Birla Institute of Technology & Science,
(BITS) Pilani, Rajasthan in association with the International
Sports Engineering Association, UK during 3-5 March 2021 at
Jodhpur under the auspices of The Ministry of Youth affairs and
Sports, New Delhi, India.
Sports, as we know it today, can hardly be separated from
technology. Transfer and integration of knowledge from a diverse
discipline is required to assist sports. The interaction of
young members from the sports and engineering fraternity is
expected to fuel a drive towards self-reliance in sports related
technology.
Theme:
The
central theme of the second International conference was Sports
Training and Technology. A number of research papers were
presented by renowned engineering researchers as part of the
conference and the pre-conference workshop, essentially
showcasing their ongoing research work. They were very inspiring
for our budding engineers attracting them towards research
related to sports, its development and entrepreneurship.

Recommendations:
Based on discussion during the conference, we have compiled the following suggestions recommended by the Panelists.
Sports engineering needs to be promoted in India in order to
connect engineers with sports development to have sustainable
and affordable indigenous sports equipment and infrastructure.
The government needs to make adequate funds available to
technical institutes for research projects exclusively for
sports development.
Investment in research and development is needed in sports
technology by engaging engineering and industry professionals to
facilitate in solving sporting problems.
UGC should encourage all Technical Institutes in India to
develop a curriculum on Sports Engineering / Sports Technology
in order to promote indigenous sports technology in India.
Major business houses can be encouraged to spend their CSR
budget for research on sports technology.
A
Research Center on Sports Technology
to be setup at BITS
Pilani as a central research facility on sports technology in
order to provide research support to the various high
performance centers around India. The research center will also
have mandate to support entrepreneurship and manpower
development. Students and faculty from various engineering and
science disciplines will be able to pursue their projects
independently in a creative atmosphere.
Expertise required for sports engineering research center:
